overview
Background
CleanSweep is a mobile app designed to help individuals in underserved Nigerian communities report pollution, join cleanup events, and track their impact.
Challenge
Improper waste disposal in underserved Nigerian communities harms the environment and public health. With no reliable reporting systems, a simple, user-first digital solution was needed to empower people to take action independently.
OBJECTIVES
Create an intuitive app that allows users to report environmental issues quickly.
Encourage volunteering and community cleanup efforts.
Make the experience engaging through gamification
Build a system that is scalable, low-friction, and works with limited connectivity.
Research
Insights That Shaped the Redesign
I began by analysing existing platforms like LoveCleanStreets and Tide Turners. Through secondary research and user interviews, I discovered:
People were eager to help, but lacked the tools.
Trust and ease-of-use were critical in community-facing apps.
Many users had limited digital literacy, so simplicity was key.

Design Process
Information Architecture & Flows
I structured the experience around key user flows to ensure seamless navigation and purposeful actions across the app.
Design Process
Sketch fast, iterate faster
I started by quickly sketching key screens and interactions. These early ideas helped shape the mid-fidelity wireframes, where I refined the information architecture and core messaging.
Wireframe development
Before shifting to high fidelity screens, I did some user tests and AB testing to validate our design decisions before making everything pixel perfect.
The Solution
Fast, focused reporting in under a minute
We designed a quick, step-by-step report flow where users can snap a photo, tag the location, select an issue type (or describe it), and submit, all in a guided format. Helpful prompts ensure clarity without overwhelming users.
A central hub for tracking environmental issues
This page gives users full visibility into the status of any reported issue. It displays key details such as images, location, category, and a progress tracker showing whether the issue is pending, being addressed, or resolved
Driving awareness through accessible content
The info hub shares quick, engaging tips on waste disposal, recycling, and sustainability. Content is designed to be readable and visually friendly—even for users with limited digital or reading skills.
Motivating action through gamification
Volunteers earn points after each verified cleanup and climb the leaderboard. Users can see their current rank, all-time best, and past top contributors. This playful layer encourages friendly competition while recognising real impact.
Results & Impact
CleanSweep v1 is launching in 2025, and we’re constantly rolling out new features to make it easier to plan and execute big and small cleanup projects.
